I haven't ridden the GSD but I assume it's a hell of a bike. But for those who are going to be riding 3+ times a week for years, I think the Tern is likely worth the money if you can afford it. For those on a budget or who are wondering whether they'll use a cargo bike a lot, the Rad is a good way to get into a car-replacement caliber bike. Overall, the Tern is a lot more money, but it's also a lot more bike. The suspension fork and seatpost also smoothed out the ride. And it had a lot more little features that seemed awfully damn smart, like the folding stem. The 4-piston hydraulic discs had a lot more stopping power as well. The Bosch cargo motor spooled on power quietly and smoothly, to the point where at first I questioned whether it had kicked in, and then realized I was cruising along at 20mph without working at it. Build quality felt okay but generally unremarkable. Though the motor was gutsy, the cadence sensor meant that there were certainly dead spots in the power curve when starting and stopping - there was often a pause when starting from a dead stop where the motor felt like "oh, we're going now!" and kicked in. The mechanical disc brakes were pretty meh - they had some stopping power but didn't feel all that well-adjusted. Plenty of power to muscle past the lycra set on big hills. I test rode the RadWagon first, and it was a lot of fun. Before the test rides I had never been on an ebike before. We were looking for a car replacement for the. At a glance, they look pretty similar, though the prices are not so similar - the Tern is over twice the price of the Rad.Ī bit about me: I'm a longtime bike commuter who now has a pair of youngish kids. Both are longtail cargo bikes with smaller wheels (22" and 20", respectively). I was able to test ride a pair of ecargo bikes a couple of weeks ago, the RadWagon and the Tern GSD.
